Found in the Finnish-American Village Pokela Room…
A Directory of the Finnish Speaking Population in Florida dated 1957 was found tucked away in cupboard in the beloved Pokela Room earlier this month.
The surname Pokela is from joki ‘river’ + the locative suffix -la,originally a habitational name from any of various farmsteads named for their riverside location.
The Finnish-American Village’s Pokela Room was named in honor of a generous donor.
In 1957, the area around Lake Worth’s city hall looked a little different! (Postcard found in the public archives of FloridaMemory.com)
